Professionalism Audit

Updated: Jan 29, 2023

It is extremely important to present yourself professionally when it comes to social media and its contents posted. With the post of this website, I am hoping to create a professional identity that is both informative and accurate in reference to myself, my skills, my education and training. My goal is for individuals who view my blog to gain the essential knowledge they need in order to make educated decisions with the care their loved one receives. I am also hoping that my blog is helpful in linking viewers to resources located in the community that aid in providing respite care that I help facilitate.

There are five main professional values that I possess and aim to express through my practice. The first and most important value I find is altruism, being able to put the needs and wants of someone else before you, and making sure that your moral practice is centered around the welfare of others. Having this trait is extremely important when someone is working with/caring for individuals, especially those part of the vulnerable population such as the elderly or special need individuals as they are often unable to represent themselves. Alongside this, integrity is another value that is extremely important to me. Being completely honest and transparent in my field is one of the best and most simple ways to build trust and develop relationships with clients and their families. When there is a sense of trust between individuals, it allows for clear communication to happen and clears any doubt about whether or not their loved one is receiving the best care. I find that integrity shows what kind of person you are, and no one will have to ever question if you will do the right thing. Additionally, teamwork is a key component in healthcare, and being able to work well with others allows for a strong work ethic to be shown. Teamwork allows for a more balanced workload which in turn provides a productive environment that allows for proper care to be provided without burnout. Compassion and commitment to care is another major value that I strive to show in my work. This is without a doubt one of the most seen and respected traits in individuals in the health industry. It is crucial to be compassionate and committed to the services you provide while showing empathy, this is not only respected by clients, but it can also ease their stress and worry about the uncertainty they may experience. In my experience, working with elders who may not remember who you are is one of the most difficult things, but being able to empathize with them and provide the best care always puts a smile on their face and in turn creates a sense of trust. Lastly, trust and respect all tie into the values I aim to show in my care but is something that should be spoken about more. When there is respect shown between individuals, it allows for a healthy work environment while taken into account an individual’s religious beliefs and carrying out with their wishes. This also creates strong relationships and alludes to trust between the care provider and recipient.

When thinking about where I fit within the healthcare system, It is important to note that I am both a respite care provider for children as well as a caregiver for the elderly. As a respite provider for youth, I am licensed under the Ministry of Children and Youth Services in Ontario. I researched different support groups and services that are available within the Windsor-Essex community in order to support individual members and their families with respect to children experiencing developmental or physical disabilities. As a caregiver, I am part of The Ontario Caregiver Organization (OCO) which works in order to protect and advocate for caregivers who create assessments based on personalized care plans for both in and out-of-home individuals. They provide certification for caregivers with yearly renewals on mandatory courses that can aid in enhancing the client's life. These courses cover topics on physical and emotional support, caring for individuals with Alzheimer's or Dementia, bedside manner, and so much more. I am protected by the OCO who provides twenty-four-hour services that include access to a hotline number to call for any information or when in distress as well as mental health services readily available.
